Civil Engineer · Teacher · Researcher

A registered Civil Engineer, educator, and early-career materials researcher, specializing in the corrosion of bare steel and reinforced concrete structures, with more than 5 years of experience in academia and industry.

About

Hi! I'm Ken, an Assistant Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) since January 2021, where I teach junior and senior BS civil engineering students the following courses:

  • Structural Analysis I and II
  • Analysis and Design of Reinforced and Prestressed Concrete
  • Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering
  • Construction Materials and Testing
  • Civil Engineering Project Integration

I earned my Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering at UPLB in 2016, during which I studied the role of seawater on the corrosion behavior of mild steels embedded in concrete cylinders. I've spent a brief time working as a corporate engineer at Cumberland Development Corporation in 2017, and later applied to the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Tokyo Metropolitan University (Japan) as a research student through the MEXT scholarship, where I served mainly as laboratory assistant to BS and MS students. Eventually, I finished my master's degree in Civil Engineering from the same institution last 2020.

During my stint at TMU, I worked with Prof. Atsushi Ueno (TMU) and Prof. Tomoko Fukuyama (Ritsumeikan University, Shiga Campus) to investigate the resistance of low nickel- and chromium-added weathering steels to corrosive and alkaline conditions.

I have been involved in the development of course materials for reinforced and prestressed concrete design as well as construction materials and testing of the BSCE 4-year curriculum in our department; an active member of various committees involved in organizing or facilitating technical conferences, workshops, and internship programs; and an early-career researcher. Aside from teaching, I have so far directly supervised eight undergraduate students, with more than 10 on-going thesis-enrolled students on topics related to Structural, Materials, and Construction Engineering.

I plan to pursue a doctorate degree in civil engineering to continue my interest on the material behavior and performance of concrete and its derivatives.
